Do We Need Coal Fired Power Plants?
April 15th, 2007
50% of all electricity generated in the United States is from 159 coal fired power plants across the US. Proponents say they are necessary and today’s technology is 80% cleaner than older versions and environmentally safe, generating electricity that’s affordable and reliable. Opponents worry about emissions and how the resulting carbon dioxides impact global warming. The decisions made by public officials, power companies, environmental activists and others on whether to expand or cut back these plants will largely determine how much electricity we get, when we get it, how much it will cost and whether there will be major or minor environmental consequences.
